NSET orients NPL staff members on Earthquake Risk

NSET has oriented on earthquake risk and need of preparedness to the staff members of Nepal Pharmaceuticals Laboratory Pvt. Ltd (NPL) under 3PERM program in order to enhance the disaster resiliency of Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Industry in Nepal. NPL is one of the largest pharmaceuticals manufacturing companies of Nepal having more than 375 employees and producing varieties of pharma products to reduce the dependency of imported products.

Mr. Surendra Shah, Finance Manager of NPL welcomed the participants and resource persons from NSET. Speaking on the session, Mr. Shah thanked the initiation taken by NSET to make earthquake communities in Nepal and extending its offer to private sector to get them prepared for disaster risk management. He said that NPL would like to join hands with NSET for further collaboration to work together for disaster risk reduction in this sector.

This is the first program of this kind associated to pharmaceuticals manufacturing sector where around 25 participants from NPL and its sister organizations had actively participated in the presentation session and interacted on their concerns.

Mr. Surya Bhakta Sangachhe, Program Manager of 3PERM Program of NSET highlighted on the program objectives as well as on the need of disaster recovery and business continuity plan for pharmaceuticals producing stakeholders.

Mr. Kalyan Bista, PPP Specialist of 3PERM made presentation on earthquake risk of Nepal as well as on how to get prepared before, during and after the earthquakes.

Mr. Anil Jayswal, HR Officer facilitated the program. Participants were very happy to get oriented on earthquake/disaster risk reduction issues and shown their commitment to act on disaster preparedness at individual and family level. NPL made commitment to work further with NSET to build capacity of NPL staff to respond to disasters.

NSET was honored with token of love from NPL at the end of the program.

Interactive presentation session program was organized by NPL with technical support from National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) under Public Private Partnership for Earthquake Risk Management Program supported by USAID/OFDA.

Bhimeswor Municipality taking initiative towards implementing Building Code in the municipality

Bhimeswor Municipality conducted an interaction program on National Building Code implementation on 23 July 2014, at Bhimeshwar, Dolakha where the concerned stakeholders discussed on the importance, the need of building code implementation in the municipality and the issues and challenges Bhimeshwar municipality is facing to implement it. The program was inaugurated by Mr. Pralhad Pokhrel, Chief District officer of Dolakha District.

Altogether 24 persons from different sectors such as officials from the municipality, political party representatives, Journalists, Chamber of Commerce representative, and representatives from NSET attended the interaction program.

Chief District Officer, Mr. Pralhad Pokhrel in his remarks highlighted the disaster risks the district is facing and the urgent need to implement the risk reduction measures. Mr. Amod Mani Dixit, executive director of NSET briefed on the importance of Building code implementation in the municipality for achieving earthquake safe communities in municipality. Chief District Officer, Mr. Pralhad Pokhrel and Municipality engineer, Mr. Suresh Raut both expressed their commitment in initiating the building code process in the municipality soon. The participants of the interaction program also urged the municipality officials to initiate the process of National Building Code without any delay and expressed their commitment to support the municipality in this endeavor.

Public Hearing Program “Nagarik Bahas”on Disaster Risk Management.

Kalinchowk FM, Dolakha with support from BBC Media Action organized a Public Hearing Program on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) at Bhimeshwar Municipality, Dolakha on July 24, 2014 . Issues such as disaster risk scenario of Dolakha, ongoing efforts on disaster risk reduction, challenges, the need and the role of all the stakeholders on DRR were discussed in the program. Mr. Pralhad Pokhrel, Chief District officer of Dolakha District and Mr. Amod Mani Dixit, Executive Director of NSET were the panelist in the program. The program was organized amidst a huge mass including high level officials from municipality, Nepal Police, other government offices, representatives from political parties, private sector, media and local residents. Kalinchowk FM of Dolakha is one of the partner radio of NSET under 3PERM project. Engineer of Bhimeshwar Municipality and representatives of NSET also visited Kalinchowk FM Radio station and a 2 hundred years old earthquake resistant house in Dolakha.

Staff of Spaces Magazine oriented



NSET orients media personnel and staff from Impressions Publishing Private Limited (Spaces Magazine) on "Earthquake Risk in Nepal and the Need for Preparedness" The Orientation program was facilitated at Spaces magazine's office in Chakupat Lalitpur on the 7th of July 2014 by NSET's Senior Technical Advisor, Mr. Surya Bhakata Sangachhen. Mr. Sangacheen provided information about what to do before, during and after earthquakes. He focused on non-structural mitigation as well as earthquake-resistant buildings. The ten participants raised many queries. Anu Rajbansh, the Head of Administration for Spaces Magazine shared her experiences from past earthquakes and she asked about how to keep safe from the non-structural materials. Likewise, Ashesh Rajbansh, the CEO of Spaces Magazine, also shared his experiences related to earthquakes and inquired about vulnerability assessment, retrofitting, Go Bags and household kits. Hemanta Shrestha, a Spaces Magazine photojournalist, asked about what to do when earthquake shaking occurs if you are driving. Other participants also asked about earthquake-resistant construction. Mr. Sangachhen clearly and succinctly summarized all the key issues within the one-hour orientation program. All the participants said they benefited from the program and that they were committed to sharing their new knowledge with their family members, friends and the community.
